Lavelle scores, Team USA wins World Cup warm-up

Rose Lavelle is showing why her selection to the final Team USA World Cup roster was a good decision. The former Wisconsin all-American tallied her 7th goal in in 25th international appearances, and the American beat New Zealand 5-0 in a World Cup warm-up.

Tobin Heath gave the home team a 1-0 advantage in the 35th minute. Lavelle put Lindsey Horan’s 40th-minute cross in the back of the net with a sliding, left-footed volley to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

Lavelle is one of 11 newcomers on the 23-woman national team roster. The 24-year-old Cincinnati-native is the only three-time all-American in UW history.

The final tune-up for the U.S. is May 26th against Mexico (in Harrison, NJ). World Cup 2019 kicks off June 7th in France. Team USA, the reigning World Cup champion, opens play June 11th vs. Thailand.
