La Crosse skateboarder in critical condition after being struck by car

A 17-year-old skateboarder is in critical condition after being struck by a car on 5th and Market Streets in La Crosse Wednesday evening.

La Crosse police told News 8 the car was westbound on Market Street and the skateboarder was northbound on 5th Avenue crossing Market Street at the crosswalk when he was struck at about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said first responders were on scene immediately, as the incident happened next to the fire station. Tri-State Ambulance transported the skateboarder with life-threatening injuries. He is now listed in critical condition.

The driver was cited for failure to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

La Crosse police will conduct its Pedestrian Safety Enforcement action on Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at the 5th and Market Street area. Police want drivers and pedestrians to be extra cautious while out on the road.
