Kyrie Irving to miss rest of season, playoffs
Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving will have to undergo a second procedure on his left knee and will miss the rest of the regular season and playoffs, the team announced Thursday.
The All-Star guard, who was acquired from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster offseason deal, underwent surgery to remove a tension wire in his left knee on March 24. He was originally expected to miss three to six weeks while recovering.
However, the team said that during that procedure a bacterial infection was discovered where Irving had two screws inserted into his patella to repair a fracture suffered during the 2015 NBA Finals. Those screws will be removed in a separate procedure on Saturday to ensure no infection remains in his knee.
“The fracture in Irving’s patella has completely healed, and his knee remains structurally sound,” the Celtics said in a statement. “He is expected to make a full recovery in 4-5 months.”
The news was first reported Thursday by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who cited league sources in breaking the news before the Celtics made it official later in the day.

The 26-year-old averaged 24.4 points, 5.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds over 60 games in his first season in Boston.
Irving last played in a March 11 loss to the Indiana Pacers, leaving the game with a sore knee after playing just 16 minutes. He later said the knee started bothering him during a March 3 game at Houston.
The Celtics have relied on third-year point guard Terry Rozier since Irving was sidelined. Rozier averaged 17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in March, including a career-high 33 points in March 25 road victory over the Sacramento Kings.
However, Rozier missed Tuesday’s road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks with a sprained ankle and then struggled in his return at Toronto on Wednesday, scoring just two points in 28 minutes on 1-of-9 shooting.
