A Kenosha soldier died while serving in the U.S. Army Thursday, Department of Defense officials said Friday.

Donnell A. Hamilton, Jr., 20, died from an illness he contracted while serving in Ghazni province in Afghanistan, according to a report.

Hamilton was deployed in July 2013. He was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and died at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas, according to the release.

Hamilton’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon, according to a press release for the Fort Hood Public Affairs Office.
