K-9 tracks down domestic abuse suspect, deputies say

MUSCODA, Wis. — A Grant County Sheriff’s K-9 is getting credit for tracking down a domestic abuse suspect who fled officers on foot, according to a release from the Muscoda Police Department.

Officers were called Wednesday at 10 a.m. to a location on North Wisconsin Avenue on a report of a domestic abuse incident.

Police said they were looking for Bryce Mathews in connection with the case when he was spotted at 11:30 a.m. walking. An officer chased Mathews through a densely wooded area of the village, but he was able to get away.

Officers got a tip at 2:30 p.m. that Mathews was spotted in the Pineland area near Otter Trail and Pine Road. Police responded and Mathews ran away. Officers said they established a perimeter and Grant County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 Riko arrived on scene and performed a search and located a track. Riko led deputies to a semi-trailer where Mathews was hiding inside, police said.

Mathews was arrested on suspicion of domestic disorderly conduct, criminal trespass to a dwelling, violation of a restraining order, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest and on four outstanding warrants.

The Grant, Richland and Crawford county sheriff’s departments, the Boscobel Police Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol assisted.
