JCPenney to close 4 Wisconsin stores
Four Wisconsin stores are on the list of more than 100 JCPenney locations that will close in the summer, the company said.
JCPenney said it is closing 138 stores in June, which will eliminate 5,000 jobs nationwide.
According to a news release in late February, the company is reducing its brick-and-mortar store sales to compete with “the growing threat of online retailers.”
JCPenney said it still plans to maintain sales at its hundreds of other physical stores, which the company believes gives it a “competitive edge” over online-only retailers. JCPenney claims 75-percent of its online orders in 2016 were connected with a physical store.
The company said it will work to relocate some of the positions cut by the closures.
Marinette’s store in the Pine Tree Mall, Marshfield’s store in the Marshfield Mall, Richland Center’s Richland Square Shopping Center and Wisconsin Rapids’ store in the Rapids Mall will all shut their doors.
JCPenney said most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17.
According to the company, JCPenney, which sells apparel and home furnishings, will have more than 800 store locations employing about 100,000 people throughout the U.S. after the store closures.
