Ignatius Anthony “Pete” Weisensel, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Home Again Assisted Living in Columbus after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Pete was born on December 28, 1930 in the Town of Clyman to Ignatius and Eleanora (Ruffies) Weisensel. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was married to Rosetta “Rosie” Ott on October 8, 1955 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Columbus and their marriage was blessed with four children, Tom, Sue, Kathy and Mary. Pete was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad and Mosinee Paper but for most of his employment life was a maintenance technician at American Packaging Corporation in Columbus from where he retired after many years of service. Pete was a hard worker and liked to stay busy, enjoying numerous part-time jobs after retirement. Pete and Rosie found much joy in spending time together bowling, camping and traveling, with some of their ventures including Alaska, Hawaii, Branson and Las Vegas. They also spent many hours laughing and making memories, one of Pete’s favorite summer pastimes being sitting around the campfire and telling stories about past good times shared with family and friends. Pete spent many hours tinkering in the garage and tending to his large garden.

Pete and Rosie were their grandchildrens’ biggest fans, keeping a busy schedule by rarely missing a sporting or music event or other activity their seven grandchildren participated in. Pete was also known by his grandchildrens’ teammates for always having a paper bag of bubble gum to share with everyone. Pete was a faithful man and an active member of St. Jerome Catholic Church. His quiet, kind demeanor is a characteristic that everyone who knew him respected and will greatly miss.

Survivors include one son, Tom (Michele) Weisensel; two daughters, Kathy (Ron) Kast and Mary (Daren) Benisch, all of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Hunter Weisensel, Chase Weisensel, Ashley (Sean) Meyer, Adam (Ashley) Kast, Aaron Kast (special friend Katie Webster), Amanda (Ryan) Kartos, Alexa (Travis) Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Dean and Tucker Kast, Miles Kartos and Rosie Meyer; two brothers, Arnold (Yvonne) Weisensel of Watertown and Adrian (Joan) Weisensel of Iron Ridge; many other relatives, in-laws and friends. Pete was preceded in death by Rosie, his wife of 60 years; daughter, Susan Weisensel; his parents, four sisters and six brothers, several relatives, in-laws and friends. Being married for 60 years, Pete and Rosie were the definition of faith, hope, love and family. Through sickness, health, laughter and tears, their primary focus remained on each other and the life they had built together.

Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Monday, April 24, 2017 at Jensen Funeral & Cremation, Columbus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M., with visitation beginning at 10:30 A.M., on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at ST. JEROME CATHOLIC CHURCH, Columbus. Rev. Steve Kortendick will officiate. Military honors will follow. Interment will be in St. Jerome Cemetery, Columbus.

The family would also like to extend sincere, heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Home Again Assisted Living for providing Pete the kindness, respect and dignity that he deserved. We, Pete’s children, will be forever grateful to each and every one of you for appreciating his sense of humor, sweet nature and showing him grace and compassion each and every day. Memorials may be directed to Home Again Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s research or St. Jerome Parish.
