Horst E. “Horsti” Hartmann

Horst E.‘Horsti’ Hartmann, age 54 of Mauston, WI, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022. Horst was born February 26, 1968, to Horst W. and Theresa Hartmann in Chicago, IL. He and his family moved from Chicago to Mauston in 1973 to start a new adventure as owner/operators of Bavarian Campsite on beautiful Castle Rock Lake. Horst graduated from Mauston High School in 1986.

After graduating high school, Horst formally joined the family business. He learned how to run the campground and became skilled in a variety of trades from plumping to carpentry and in between. He also was a gifted ‘people person’. He loved spending time with family, friends and his customers who visited the campground.

Throughout his life Horst remained close to his German (Bavarian) heritage and its culture. He enjoyed travelling, often returning to Chicago and Germany to visit family, as well as travelling around the US. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed among other things snowmobiling, jet skiing, river tubing and ‘off-roading’ on his ATV. Horstwas also a big fan of fireworks and golf, hostinga July 4th fireworks display and a golf outing annually.

Horst was predeceased by his parents Horst and Theresa and he is survived by several aunts and uncles, along with cousins in the US and in Germany. His family and his many friends will miss him and his smile dearly. He will be remembered for his kindness, great sense of humor, generosity, humility and friendship.

A small gathering is being planned at one of his favorite local spots, Shipwreck Bay, from 12pm to 2pm on Saturday, October 22, 2022, where sharing of photos and stories of Horst are welcome. An additional Celebration of Life will be announced for family and friends in Spring 2023. The family requests that any donations in Horst’s memory be held until the Spring 2023 Celebration of Life.
