Honoring Natural Resource Champions

Great names for new Sugar River Wildlife Area

On a little lighter note, we want to acknowledge an honor that’s in the works that we just think is kind of cool. Dane County has proposed naming the newly acquired Sugar River Wildlife Area in honor of former County Executive Kathleen Falk and Topf Wells, Falk’s former Chief of Staff.

Both Falk and Wells could easily be honored for any number of accomplishments and contributions to the surprise of no one and likely without editorial comment. But this particular recognition strikes us as especially meaningful and appropriate. Both Falk and Wells were nothing if not passionate for preserving for public access Dane County’s abundant natural resources. Together they worked to acquire lands for parks, improve and protect water quality in lakes and streams and create public access to those areas for hiking, biking, fishing and more.

It’s nice to think that for countless years to come future generations will associate these beautiful assets with Kathleen Falk and Topf Wells. We look forward to the County Board making the Falk Wells Sugar River Wildlife Area official.
