Hmong New Year celebration begins Friday

The annual Hmong New Year celebration kicks off Friday in Sheboygan when at least 3,000 people are expected to attend a three-day event of food, music, entertainment and cultural competition.

Event co-chairman Shua Yang says this year’s theme will focus on how far the Hmong community has come over the last four decades. Yang says individuals have advanced to hold political positions, operate their own businesses and serve in the military.

Yang says the celebration at the Acuity Fieldhouse at North High School is a time when communities can come together, talk about what’s going on in their families and wish blessings for the year ahead.

Sheboygan Press Media says Friday’s program including a dancing and singing competition. Saturday includes a complimentary lunch, fashion and cultural events. Sunday is a talent and activity show.
