Heavy rain closes Richmond airport for several hours

More than 7" of rain forced the temporary closure of the Richmond, Va. airport on June 22, 2018.

Heavy rain near Richmond resulted in flash flood warnings and numerous flooded roads in the area, The Weather Channel reported Friday.

The Richmond International Airport reported 7.25 inches of rain early Friday morning. Water covered portions of the airport’s runways and tarmac suspending flights for several hours. Air traffic was restored at 9 a.m. ET, but flight delays were expected to continue throughout the day.

Downtown Richmond also reported flooded roadways throughout the night Thursday into the morning hours Friday.

The 7.25 inches of rain was the second-wettest on record for the airport. The highest rainfall amount was 8.79 inches recorded on August 12, 1955.
