Harper, Phillies reach record $330 million deal

Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a record 13-year, $330 million contract, according to media reports.

The deal would represent the largest deal ever awarded in baseball history, surpassing the 13-year, $325 million contract extension outfielder Giancarlo Stanton signed with the Miami Marlins before the 2015 season.

Scott Boras, Harper’s agent, told The Associated Press the deal was agreed to at 10:34 a.m. PST, subject to a successful physical.

The 26-year-old All-Star and 2015 National League MVP had spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Washington Nationals, compiling a .270 career batting average with 184 home runs and 521 RBIs.

Besides surpassing Stanton’s 2015 contract extension, Harper’s deal also beats the previous high for a free-agent signing, set last week by Manny Machado’s 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres.

According to ESPN and the AP, Harper will get a $20 million signing bonus plus a $10 million salary this season. He then will get $26 million per year over the next nine seasons of the deal and $22 million annually in the last three years.
