Group petitions to stop appeal against same-sex marriage

AG Van Hollen is appealing judge's ruling to lift same-sex marriage ban

MADISON, Wis. — Same-sex couples and their families stood for marriage equality Thursday in Madison.

They, along with support from the group Wisconsin Unites for Marriage, gathered at the Capitol to present more than 3,200 signed petitions urging Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to stop his appeal of a federal judge’s ruling to lift the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

“People need to know that the situation is still in limbo, and it’s still being challenged. And as of now, we still aren’t legally married here,” said Kate Hewson, who was part of the group that dropped off the petitions.

Oral arguments are scheduled for Aug. 26 in Chicago at the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
