Grothman aims to be ‘more conservative’ candidate

MILWAUKEE — State Sen. Glenn Grothman is aiming to position himself as the stronger conservative in Wisconsin’s 6th District congressional race.

Grothman faces two other Republicans, state Rep. Duey Stroebel and state Sen. Joe Leibham, in the primary to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Tom Petri.

Leibham announced his candidacy Tuesday.

Grothman says helped with Leibham’s previous campaigns and Leibham comes from a “very wonderful, huge family” with 12 siblings.

Grothman says he expects Leibham to be a formidable opponent, but he believes voters will see that he has a “more conservative” record. Grothman is known for his outspoken attacks on affirmative action, welfare benefits, early sex education and abortion.

One Democrat also has declared his candidacy for Petri’s seat. Petri announced earlier this month that he would not run for re-election.
