Garbage truck dumps load on I-94 causing backup

1 dead, 1 hurt in crash on Highway 51

The Wisconsin State Patrol said a disabled garbage truck and trash spread on the road shoulder had traffic backed up on eastbound Interstate 94 near Jefferson.

Sgt. Greg Jenswold with the state patrol said a garbage truck was forced to dump its load on I-94 Friday afternoon near mile marker 265 after the driver believed the vehicle was on fire.

According to the report, the garbage truck had a tire blow out causing billowing smoke. The driver thought there was a fire in the cargo area of the truck. The driver intentionally offloaded the garbage it was carrying to avoid a fire of the load, Jenswold said.

The majority of the garbage was on the shoulder but some spilled over approximately 2 feet past the fog line into the right lane of I-94, state patrol said.

No one was injured in the incident, according to the report.

A crew was working to clear the garbage off the roadway and one load had already been taken as of the early Friday afternoon.

At about 1:40 p.m., officials said traffic was backed up on eastbound I-94 about 4 miles.
