Game day by the numbers: 70,000 Badger fans, $16+ million for Madison

MADISON, Wis. — While 70,000 fans cheer on the Badgers inside Camp Randall, some of the biggest celebrations happen outside the stadium, in busy bars, restaurants, hotels, and stores city-wide.

Each season, 1.8 million people visit Madison on game days, according to a 2019 economic impact survey. This year, local business owners are counting on those fans to provide a much-needed boost, after a tumultuous 18 months.

Here’s a breakdown of the numbers…

$16 million: The amount of money each home football game brings in for the state

$114 million: The amount of money tied to home football games each year in Wisconsin

1,080: The number of jobs supported by football games each season

64%: The percentage of those jobs located in the city of Madison

15%: The percentage of fans that stay overnight on football weekends

$1.7 million: The amount of money overnight visitors generate for Madison in hotel taxes alone

7: The number of home games for the 2021 football season

3: The number of home games for the 2020 season

0: The number of home games with fans in 2020
