From rifle to rake: Guns 2 Gardens turns weapons into tools
MADISON, Wis. — Midvale Community Lutheran Church gave local gun owners a unique chance to repurpose their firearms.
The church asked people to donate unwanted and unloaded guns at a safe surrender event Saturday. The weapons were then dismantled on-site and leftover parts were forged into gardening tools.
“A retired officer who trained us to check for ammunition predicted that we’d receive mostly handguns,” Jeff Wild said. “That has not been the case.”
Wild said the group received mostly rifles and shotguns and had already been given 20 weapons over the course of the morning. The project is part of the ‘Guns 2 Gardens’ movement, which aims to reduce gun violence. 13 similar events took place across the country Saturday.
