Former UW animal researcher appeals his firing

MADISON, Wis. — A former University of Wisconsin-Madison animal researcher fired for taking two federal officials into a closed room during a tour and not relaying what he told them is appealing his termination.

Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission documents indicate members of the National Institutes of Health were touring UW-Madison’s primate research center in November when technician Andrew Gilboe asked two of them to join him in a closed room. He refused to let anyone enter, saying he was speaking to the officials privately.

He told UW officials during an investigatory hearing in December that he asked the NIH officials to inspect the marmoset cages from the inside. The school fired him for insubordination the same month. He filed an appeal WERC on March 24. His attorney didn’t immediately respond to an email.
