FITCHBURG, Wis. — The Fitchburg Police Department says the area surrounding an apartment building just off Verona Road is now considered safe after finding what they called “potentially hazardous materials.”

Officers were sent to the 2300 block of Chalet Gardens Road at about 5 p.m. Tuesday after a family member requested a welfare check of a resident there, according to the news release. Police found the resident and took them into protective custody.

While searching the apartment, officials found the potentially hazardous items.

The release said the other residents were evacuated from the apartment “out of an abundance of caution.” The Red Cross helped facilitate temporary housing for those people while emergency personnel cleared the area.

The area was deemed safe at 2 a.m. Wednesday. Residents will be allowed to return Wednesday morning. Police will remain on scene while they finish their investigation.
