First responders face off on the ice for charity

The Janesville police and fire departments faced off on the ice Saturday for a hockey game to raise money for charity.

The friendly rivalry pits first responders against each other to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The disease is something many have experienced personally.

“One of our officers who worked with the department for 16 years, his daughter Maddy was diagnosed with cancer and had a long journey. She’ll be out on the ice a couple of times to show recognition on her journey and kind of recognize the family with the hardship they’ve gone through,” Jennifer Reed from the police department said.

Organizers said the goal is to have the event become an annual tradition with a traveling trophy.

The departments also partnered with the Janesville Jets hockey team to give out 200 free tickets to a Jets game.

The fire department won the game 7-2.
