Elections commission to discuss statewide recount Monday

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Elections Commission will hold a teleconference Monday morning to discuss the impending statewide presidential recount.

Green Party candidate Jill Stein filed for the recount Friday, saying she wants to make sure hackers didn’t skew results in Wisconsin and other swing states. The campaign had raised about $5.2 million by Friday to seek recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, where Republican President-elect Donald Trump won by small margins.

Wisconsin election officials will approve a proposed timeline for the recount and walk through the procedure moving forward. Officials have previously said they hope to have the votes recounted by Dec. 13.

According to The Associated Press, Wisconsin GOP Executive Director Mark Morgan issued a statement Friday calling Stein’s decision to seek a recount “absurd” and “nothing more than an expensive political stunt that undermines the election process.”

President-elect Donald Trump blasted the recount Saturday, calling it a “scam” and a fundraising ploy for the Green Party.

The campaign for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton plans to participate in the recount process but is not contesting the results, campaign officials said Saturday.

Wisconsin Elections Commission administrator Mike Haas told News 3 Friday that there is no evidence of tampering or widespread miscounting of votes.
