Eleanore T. Jones

STOUGHTON/MONONA-Eleanore T. Jones, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, surrounded in love. She was born on Aug. 21, 1923, in Marshall, the daughter of Laura Budig and Benjamin Taves.

She grew up on a dairy farm just outside of Marshall. Eleanore graduated from Marshall High School in 1941, and was class treasurer. She then attended Madison Business School.

Eleanore married Ken Jones on Feb. 23, 1946. They lived in Monona for many years. They spent summer weekends at their family cottage on Hills Lake near Wild Rose. Eleanore worked at General Heating and Air Conditioning and Wisconsin State Journal Credit Union. She loved to cook and try new recipes. Eleanore was a judge for the Wisconsin State Journal cookbook contest for many years. She took great pride in her garden, growing tomatoes and jalapeno peppers to put in her fresh salsa. Eleanore was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Monona. She enjoyed helping serve Easter morning breakfast at church. Eleanore loved to go birding. She was a member of the Madison Audubon Society. She took birding trips to Africa, Thailand, Hungary, Costa Rica, and Bonaire. For more than 15 years, Eleanore managed the food cart at the Audubon Art Fair held every May. She loved playing golf and she also loved playing cards. She played bridge several times a week and played gin rummy with her daughter, Cathy. She was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother, and “super” grandmother. Her wisdom, her quick wit, warm hugs, and sweet smile will be missed. 

Eleanore is survived by her daughter, Catharin (Carl) Chenoweth; son, Tom Jones; grandchildren, Ahnika Jones, Alistair (Jake) Lawyer, Andrew Jones, and Abigail Jones; great-grandchildren, Kazzy and Gabe Lawyer; sister, Evelyn Berlin, nieces and nephew.

A memorial service will be held at ST. STEPHENS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona, at 6 P.M. on Thursday, June 14, 2012. Visitation will be held at the church from 5 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday. Friends and family are invited to a meal following the service. Memorials may be made to Madison Audubon Society or Dane County Humane Society.
