Eleanor P Beimel
The kindest lady you ever met has gone to heaven. She was loved and respected by anyone who had the great fortune to know her. Eleanor Beimel, 84, passed away early Sunday morning July 30th at Agrace Hospice Care in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born January 21, 1933 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin to Oscar and Iva Colvin. Eleanor was the youngest of the Colvin children, Wayne, Maynard, Blanchard, Oscar (Bud), and Coral Fern.
Eleanor lived in Reedsburg and Necedah during early childhood. She attended Necedah High School for three years, then transferred to Elroy High School where she graduated in 1950.
On March 17, 1952 Eleanor married Norbert Steffes. Norbert was a Criminal Investigator for the United States Army. The couple had three children, Douglas, John, and Dwight. Norbert’s military career had the family moving to such places as Alabama, Oklahoma, and Germany. The family settled in Mauston, Wisconsin when Norbert retired in 1967. Eleanor worked as a Nurses Assistant for Hess Memorial Hospital during these years.
Norbert died in 1974. On March 12, 1982 Eleanor married Gordon Beimel. Gordon and Eleanor lived in Mauston until Gordon’s death in 1987.
Eleanor continued to work at Hess Memorial until her retirement in March of 1998. At this time she continued to assist people by being an Escort driver. If anyone needed a ride to a hospital appointment, Eleanor would get the call. There are many people in the Mauston community who received rides to Marshfield, Madison, and La Crosse from Eleanor!
Eleanor enjoyed the company of her passengers and took great care in seeing that they arrived safely. She enjoyed walking to the Busy Bee Restaurant for coffee and conversation. She loved riding her bike.
Her heart was always tuned in to her faith. It was the most sustaining element of her life and helped her deal with all of life’s troublesome times. Eleanor was a proud member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She loved reading her bible and attending church services.
Survivors include her three sons, Douglas (Mary Jo) Steffes of Madison, John Steffes of Mauston, and Dwight Steffes of Oconomowoc, grandchildren Sarah, Benjamin, Samuel, Tracy and Todd, and her daughter by marriage Christy Beimel of Los Angeles.
Funeral Service for Eleanor will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Church of the Nazarene, Mauston, followed by a luncheon in the church basement. After the luncheon we will take Eleanor to the cemetery in Valton, Wisconsin. Friends may call on Thursday, August 3rd from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Crandall Funeral Home, Mauston and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
We wish to thank the doctors and nurses at Meriter Hospital and the staff at Agrace Hospice Care for their compassion and care for Eleanor. Her memory will forever be with us. She has not traveled far, for the ones we love are always in our thoughts and prayers.
