Elderly man found dead in frost-covered car following single-vehicle crash

SAUK COUNTY, Wis. — The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office says a 73-year-old man from Reedsburg was found dead Thursday morning inside a frost-covered minivan that had crashed sometime overnight.
The county’s dispatch center first received a report of a van spotted in the middle of a cornfield near the intersection of Van Hoosen Road and Shady Lane Road in the Township of Fairfield at about 7:11 a.m. Thursday morning.
The 73-year-old man was the only person inside the van and was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat. First responders later determined he had already passed away.
Authorities say their initial investigation determined the man was headed east on Shady Lane Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the T-style intersection, went airborne over the embankment, and landed about 100 yards into the field. Authorities said the front of the vehicle was heavily damaged.
The fact the van was covered in frost when it was found led authorities to believe the crash happened sometime overnight and wasn’t discovered until the morning.
The man’s name is not being released until his family can be notified.
