East side credit union robbery suspect found dead, police say

Robber tells credit union teller he had explosive device

MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man who was wanted in connection to a robbery on Monday was found dead a couple hours after the crime, Madison police said.

The robber told the teller at a credit union on Madison’s east side that he had an explosive device, according to a release.

Police said the robber, later identified as Steven J. Conant, 46, entered Summit Credit Union at 1799 Thierer Rd. at 9:05 a.m. and passed a note to the teller. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

At 11:37 a.m. on Monday police were dispatched to reports of a man in medical distress at the Kelly’s Market at 2601 Shopko Drive, officials said. Life-saving efforts were performed, but the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The man was later identified as Conant.

The cause of death has not been determined pending results of an autopsy and toxicology exam.
