Earl Morkrid

Earl Morkrid, age 77, formerly of Viola, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse.

Earl, the son of Martin and Fern (Fish) Morkrid was born in Viroqua on April 16, 1935. He was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and graduated from Viroqua Area Schools. On February 4, 1956 he was united in marriage to Joan Morrison.

Earl worked for Fairbanks-Morse in Beloit as a machinist. He was also a dairy farmer in rural Viroqua and Viola and worked for Kirkland Enterprises Cattle Company. Later he worked for the Town of Forest in Richland County as a township patrolman until retirement.

In his spare time he enjoyed camping, playing cards, hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with friends and family.

Earl is survived by his loving wife Joan; children Kathleen (Thomas) Kaiser and Kay (Mark) Metcalf; grandchildren: Jennifer (Nathan) Hemmersbach, Angela Kaiser, Peter Kaiser, Amber Metcalf and Megan Metcalf; great-grandchild Aubriell McCoy; sisters Diane (Bill) Johnson-Bross of Viroqua, Gloria McCarter of Pleasant Prairie, Karen (Ted) Larson of Westby, Shirley (Robert) Kelsey of Greenville, SC; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Selma Jean; brother SFC Kenneth; brothers-in-law Harlan Johnson and James McCarter; father-in-law and mother-in-law Clair and Florence Morrison.

The family would like to thank the Gundersen Lutheran doctors and nurses with special gratitude to Dr. Siddiqi.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (hwy 56) in Viroqua. The Reverend Lindsay Paul Jordan will officiate with burial to follow in Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.
