DOT expects travel delays during holiday weekend

Motorists advised to avoid peak travel times, use alternate routes

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials advise travelers to avoid peak travel times on Interstate 39/90/94 during the upcoming holiday weekend.

The Fourth of July holiday weekend is the summer’s busiest travel time, and DOT officials expect to see delays along the Interstate 39/90/94 corridor in Dane and Rock counties.

Heavy traffic headed north before the holiday and returning home Sunday is expected to cause delays, according to a release. Drivers are advised to avoid traveling at peak times between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

In addition to heavy volume for the holiday weekend, the construction zone on the Interstate bridges at the Highway 151 interchange near Madison is expected to slow traffic down, officials said. Three lanes will be open in each direction. Work will be postponed over the weekend, but the northbound lanes are split to accommodate construction, and speeds are reduced to 55 miles per hour.
