Doris J. Young

Doris Jeannette Young, 89, of Janesville, died on June 18, 2012. She was born on February 27, 1923, in Wausau, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ewald and Martha Schultz. Doris graduated from Wausau High School and then worked as a bookkeeper before marrying her neighborhood sweetheart, William A. Young, on June 21, 1947, in Wausau. A month later they moved to Janesville where they built their home and raised their family. Biking was her life-long interest including a 225-mile road trip as a teen-ager, a 50-mile trip on their 50th wedding anniversary, and 10-mile daily exercise routes in retirement. Many Janesville residents knew her as the “bike lady.” She also enjoyed writing—starting with 10 years of daily diary entries in her youth. Later she brightened the lives of many with cards and letters to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, or just to say “thinking of you.” She also enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting, playing the piano, and taking care of her backyard birds. She belonged to First Lutheran Church for over 60 years.

Doris is survived by two daughters; Sandra Armstrong of Janesville and Marilyn Tremml of Holland, MI; four grandchildren: Cheryl (Gregg) Gallina of Crofton, MD; Kevin (Tara) Armstrong of Pembroke, MA; Michele Tremml of Walker, MI; and Brian Tremml of Iowa City, IA; and two great-granddaughters; Mackenzie and Molly. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Robert.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH with Pastor Jim Melvin officiating. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church on the day of the funeral. As an expression of love and sympathy, memorial contributions can be made to First Lutheran Church Foundation or Rotary Gardens.
