DNR Looking For Sturgeon Protectors

The state Department of Natural Resources is looking for a few good men and women to guard sturgeon.

Every year, the giant prehistoric fish make their annual journey through the Lake Winnebago system and up the Wolf River to spawn. And every year the DNR positions volunteers on the shorelines to protect them and make sure no one nets or spears them.

The sturgeons’ journey typically starts in mid-April. But because this year’s warm weather has sped up the process, the DNR is looking for volunteers to start this week.

The agency is looking for recruits for this year’s guard duty. The work isn’t easy — volunteers face 12-hour shifts and all manner of weather.

Anyone who’s interested can find more information on the DNR’s website at http://dnr.wi.gov/volunteer/animals/Fish.html.
