Winter-themed family fun comes to Madison this weekend with Disney on Ice and the Frozen Assets Festival. Parents aren’t left out with a premier stand-up comedian and bluegrass music benefit show.

Madison’s first Latina poet laureate, Angela Trudell Vasquez, comes to A Room of One’s Own for a night of intimate spoken word readings.
Disney on Ice Presents Dream Big, Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum

Your favorite Disney characters take to the ice for several musical numbers in the show “Dream Big” at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Frozen Assets Festival, The Edgewater Hotel
Saturday, Feb, 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The Frozen Assets Festival — now in its sixth year being organized by the Clean Lakes Alliance — is a celebration of winter activities. On Lake Mendota in front of The Edgewater Hotel there will be pond hockey, snowshoeing, curling demos, sleigh rides, kite flying and more. And the event is free.
“Flippers & Flappers,” Wild Rumpus Circus, Goodman Community Center
Saturday, Feb. 8, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 9, 2 p.m.
Presented by the Wild Rumpus Circus, “Flippers & Flappers” will feature performers of all ages as clowns, stilt walkers, jugglers, aerialists and acrobats at the Goodman Community Center.

“Fellow Travelers,” Capitol Theater, Overture Center for the Arts
Friday, Feb. 7, 8 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 9, 2:30 p.m.
The “Lavender Scare” — the effort to drum gays out of federal government jobs in the 1950s, as led by Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy — is revisited in “Fellow Travelers,” a heart-rending production staged in Overture’s Capitol Theater by Madison Opera and based on a novel by Thomas Mallon.

Too Many Zooz, Majestic Theatre

New York City’s high intensity brass house trio Too Many Zooz comes to the Majestic Theater with support from the up-and-coming beat tape producer Birocratic.
Mike Doughty, High Noon Saloon
Friday, Feb. 7, 8:30 p.m.
Mike Doughty, founder of the band Soul Coughing, brings his extensive catalogue to the High Noon Saloon. Doughty and his longtime collaborator Andrew “Scrap” Livingston will put on a unique interactive show.
United Way Bluegrass Benefit, Barrymore Theater
Sunday, Feb. 9, 1 p.m.
The Barrymore hosts an afternoon worth of local roots music for the United Way Bluegrass Benefit. The bands include Sortin’ the Mail, Soggy Prairie and the Cork & Bottle String Band.

Paul Virzi, Comedy on State
Thursday-Saturday Feb. 6-8, 8 p.m. & 10:30 p.m.
Paul Virzi hosts the weekly podcast “The Virzi Effect” and put out the chart-topping comedy album “Night at the Stand.” Virzi brings his eclectic comedy background to Comedy on State this weekend.
