Detective testifies against man charged with poisoning neighbor’s dog

The Poynette man charged with poisoning a neighbor’s dog heard the evidence against him in court Thursday.

Trent Hebel faces one felony count in connection to the death of 4-year-old golden retriever named Gander in May 2015.

During the investigation, police found suspicious containers with food in a neighbor’s fenced-in backyard.

Police said the containers had meat laced with rat poison inside.

In court, a detective testified that lab tests matched a fingerprint on the containers to Hebel.

The dog eventually had to be put down.

The detective also said the veterinarian told him that antifreeze was found in the dog’s system.

Police described Hebel as a jealous ex-boyfriend.
