Report: Man was fleeing police

MADISON, Wis. — A Dane County sheriff’s deputy was knocked unconscious when his head hit the pavement while trying to take a man into custody, according to a release from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Brian Biwer was helping Madison police on a call about an unwanted subject on Walbridge Avenue at about 3 a.m. Thursday. Madison police said a 21-year-old woman called for help when her former boyfriend damaged the door to her residence and took off with a key.

The report states that Jaren E. Lee, 24, of Madison, was running toward Biwer, who attempted to take Lee into custody. When Lee resisted, Biwer struck his head on the road leaving him unconscious for a short period, deputies said.

Police said Lee tried to flee but was slowed by low-riding jeans that ended up around his knees.

Biwer was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released. He is a 14-year veteran in the Sheriff’s Office and a K-9 handler.

Two Madison police officers were also suffered minor injuries in the incident. One injured a wrist and another got a bruise and a cut.

Lee was arrested on suspicion of battery to a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property and resisting an officer.
