Storm damage in Platteville

A decision is expected to be made next week about a disaster declaration request in Grant County, an official said Saturday.

Representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration toured the damage in Platteville Wednesday to determine if the affected area qualifies for disaster assistance, Grant County Emergency Management Director Steve Braun said in a news release.

Braun said damage from the June storms “does not appear to meet criteria for a federal disaster declaration” and it appears the Federal Emergency Management Agency is not likely to assist the county.

Braun also said Saturday that the Red Cross and The Salvation Army continue to assist families in need in the communities affected by the tornado on June 19 in Platteville and tornado near Fennimore Sunday and following severe storms throughout the county with measured wind gusts peaking at 78 mph north of Lancaster Monday.

Braun also said there are various resources that may be available for those affected by the storms and anyone who may need assistance can contact the emergency management office at 608-723-7171.
