DCI adds new department focused on officer-involved death investigations

A new department has been created at the Division of Criminal Investigation that will be responsible for the Department of Justice’s officer-involved death investigations, according to a release.

Attorney General Brad Schimel announced Thursday the creation of the Bureau of Special Investigations.

Tina Virgil, current director for the Eastern Region, will lead the Bureau of Special Investigations, according to the release.

Virgil and three special agents assigned to the bureau will provide management and investigation of all OID investigations with the support of staff from all of DCI’s field offices as needed, officials said. Virgil will also be responsible for the management of public records compliance within DCI.

“The Bureau of Special Investigations will play an important role in maintaining the level of transparency and thoroughness in OIDs the public deserves,” Schimel said in the release.
