David J. Hitchins
David J. Hitchins, 59, of Platteville was called home to heaven on Thursday, July 5, 2012 following a 4 year battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012 at the Lutheran Church of Peace in Platteville. Rev. Jeff Pedersen will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Dave was born on June 9, 1953 in Urbana, IL, the son of James L. and Charlotte I. (Hauge) Hitchins. On August 7, 1976 he married the love of his life, Nanette K. Knowles, in Aurora, IL. Dave grew up in Champaign and Mahomet Illinois. He attended Northern Illinois University and graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. He spent the next 10 years as a project specialist at the UW-Madison Primate Center. Dave moved on as one of the founders for Wisconsin Analytical Laboratories in Watertown, WI. He subsequently managed several testing laboratories and even spent a few years as a Wisconsin Licensed Cheesemaker. Dave finished his career as a chemistry lecturer at UW-Platteville, thoroughly enjoying the students, faculty and research. At home Dave delighted in his many projects, from raising llamas to making wine.
He is survived by his wife, Nan, of Platteville; daughter, Emily Yoshino of Prairie du Chien; son, Jim (Cheryl) Hitchins of Madison; grandchildren, Krystal, Ashley, and Rebecca Yoshino; parents, Jim and Charlotte Hitchins of Mahomet, IL; sisters, Charlene (Jason) Roush of Fischer, IL; Barbara (Scot) Miller of Defiance, MO; brother, Thomas (Amy) Hitchins of Seymour, IL; and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
