Dane County Humane Society raising money for equipment to help birds amid higher avian flu risk

MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Humane Society is asking for help so it can continue treating wild birds and other animals at risk of catching the bird flu that has been spreading throughout Wisconsin.

The organization is hoping to raise $5,000 to pay for testing kits and protective equipment. On Monday, state officials confirmed a case in a backyard flock in Bayfield County, bringing the number of Wisconsin counties that have reported confirmed cases in domestic or commercial flocks to 14.

“We can’t help these animals if we can’t buy the supplies to test them, to clean them and disinfect the areas and then to also wear the protective gear so that way we’re not putting any humans at risk, and we’re also keeping the rest of our patients at the wildlife center safe,” Lisa Bernard, the organization’s public relations coordinator, said.

Without the tools, the humane society said it likely won’t be able to rehabilitate high-risk species while the risk of the bird flu remains high.
