Dane County Humane Society now part of ASPCA transfer program

MADISON, Wis. — The Dane County Humane Society is now part of a transfer program designed to help other overcrowded shelters across the country.

The Humane Society was accepted into the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ dog transfer program, in which the Humane Society will receive biweekly transfers of dogs from other shelters, primarily in the South, that have run out of space.

On the other weeks, the Humane Society will receive a transfer of dogs from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society in Birmingham, Alabama.

Sarah Byerley, the Humane Society’s animal operations manager, said the demand for dogs in Madison is strong.

“It’s amazing. Our community is able to and really wants to adopt all of these dogs, to get them from areas that are struggling,” she said.

The Humane Society has participated in two transfers so far after being accepted into the program, which required an application and a shelter inspection.
