Dane County executive announces 2018 budget

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi introduced his 2018 operating budget Monday, proposing $537 million in safety and wellness measures.

One of the largest budget items includes $75 million toward a new, consolidated jail that would be built on top of the public safety building.

“My condition for approving this request is that we do everything possible on the front end and also upon re-entry to provide rehabilitation and reintegration back into society for those who have been incarcerated,” Parisi said in a press conference.

The budget also gives $1 million to address mental health in the school system, $1.1 million to help tackle poverty and the racial achievement gap, $2.5 million for lake cleanup and money for highway improvement. It also includes $4.4 million to expand County Highway M between Madison’s west side and Verona.

Under the budget, the county tax portion on the average $270,000 Madison home would increase $55.
