Corners may be left unattended if crossing guard vacancies aren’t filled, city says

MADISON, Wis. — The city of Madison has an immediate need for school crossing guards after four guards retired over the last six weeks, officials said.

Right now, crossing guards are working double duty, serving on their own corners and working at unattended intersections.

If the four open positions don’t get filled, Madison police officers will have to be pulled from their daily duties to fill in, but even that won’t help cover all of the open corners.

“Worst situation – we may have to leave corners unstaffed and those kids are left on their own,” said Patti Knoche, city of Madison crossing guard supervisor. “And we simply cannot have that happen.”

The positions are permanent and part time, and starting pay is $16 an hour. Officials said anyone who is interested in applying should click on the human resources link on the city’s website.
