Copps on Whitney Way to close permanently

MADISON, Wis. — The Copps grocery store on South Whitney Way in Madison will close for good next month, a company spokesman said.

James Hyland, spokesman for Roundy’s, which owns Copps, said in an email that the decision to close the store was based on its financial performance and the consumer demand in the market.

Hyland said the 76 employees at the Whitney Way store were all offered jobs at Roundy’s-owned Madison-area Pick ‘n Save stores. He said at least 72 employees will be transferring.

The Copps will close in mid-May, Hyland said.

An employee at the Whitney Way store said employees have been telling customers of the impending closure since Friday.

The Whitney Way store is the last Copps standing in Madison. Several other former Copps stores in the Madison area were rebranded as Pick ‘n Save stores in November.

The other store in Madison still bearing the Copps sign is under transition to become a Pick’n Save. Angie Remington, a grocery operations manager, said the store at 1312 S. Park St. began changing its interior March 27 and expects to complete the switch April 14. She said the store is hiring for new positions related to increasing the store’s services, such as adding a fryer and hot soup bar.
