LIST: Cooling centers where you can beat the heat if you have no power or A/C

MADISON, Wis. — As Wisconsin deals with record-breaking heat, there are multiple places people can go to cool off if they do not have power or air conditioning.

A shelter at Madison College, 1701 Wright Street, opened Monday night for those affected by severe weather. The American Red Cross will continue to operate that shelter through at least Wednesday afternoon.

A cooling center was also opened at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, and the cooling center there will again be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Visitors should enter through the building’s west lobby by the large globe.

Metro Transit will also provide free rides to and from both cooling centers.

Among those who visited the cooling centers were Anna Rue and Charlie McNulty, whose home in Madison’s Eken Park neighborhood still didn’t have power Tuesday morning. When they woke up in the dark, they brought their kids to the cooling center at Madison College, where the Red Cross gave out cool water and snacks.

The couple said it was a relief to have a place to go just minutes from their home.

“If this happened last week, we would’ve just stayed at home and make do, but with a day like this, it’s nice to have a place to have reliable air conditioning,” Rue said.

“The house was getting more and more uncomfortable as the hours go by,” McNulty said.

Middleton will also offer the following cooling centers on Tuesday and Wednesday:

  • Middleton Police Department
    • 7341 Donna Drive (24 hours daily)
  • Middleton Fire Station
    • 7600 University Avenue (24 hours daily)

Power has been restored to the Monona Public Library and Senior Center following Monday’s storm. Both are now open to be used as cooling centers. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
