Competency evaluation ordered for State Street sexual assault suspect

MADISON, Wis. — A Dane County judge ordered a competency exam Thursday for the man charged in connection with a sexual assault in downtown Madison.

Ivan Smart, 22, faces one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of false imprisonment as a party to a crime, according to online court records. Officers with the Madison Police Department arrested Smart in late July.

During Smart’s initial appearance in Dane County Court on July 29, a court commissioner ordered he be held on $15,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is a competency hearing scheduled for Sept. 27 at 1 p.m.
