Civil case against Steven Avery continues

A civil case against a Mishicot man convicted of killing a young photographer nearly eight years ago is still winding its way through the courts.
The family of Teresa Halbach filed a civil suit back in 2006 against Steven A. Avery. The case continues Thursday with a review hearing.
The civil case lagged because it overlapped the criminal case and an ultimately unsuccessful appeal.
Avery, now 50, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for first-degree intentional homicide in the 2005 death of the 25-year-old Halbach. His nephew, Brendan Dassey, is also serving a life term for the crime.
Avery’s case drew nationwide attention because he had been wrongfully imprisoned in a separate case, serving 18 years for rape until he was cleared by DNA evidence.
