City approves $145,000 in extra security funding for troubled Tree Lane apartment building

A troubled apartment building on Madison’s west side that houses formerly homeless families will now get more money to improve security after the council rejected a similar proposal last week.

Tuesday night, the Madison City Council approved $145,000 for the development, $20,000 less than the amount previously proposed. That money will be used to staff the 45-unit building around the clock by at least one person, who is trained in “trauma-informed practices and conflict de-escalation.”

Police have been called to the Tree Lane apartments hundreds of times since it opened last summer for gunshots, fights, and other disturbances. The extra worker will help support security staff already working there.

The YMCA is still preparing to pull out of that building next month, making this just the latest investment the city of Madison is making in Tree Lane. Last week, the Common Council approved a $275,000 investment to help cover case management services, youth programming, and child care.
