Chris McIntosh officially named next Wisconsin Badgers athletic director
MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison is officially announcing Chris McIntosh as its next athletic director.
Reports began to surface Tuesday afternoon that the former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman would be the pick to follow Barry Alvarez as the university’s AD. The university made the official announcement Wednesday morning after the hiring was approved by the Board of Regents.
McIntosh will be introduced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
He played for Alvarez on the Wisconsin football team in the late 1990s, and was named a consensus All-American offensive tackle in 1999 after helping the Badgers win back-to-back Rose Bowls in 1998 and 1999. He was a first round pick in the NFL Draft and played three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

“‘Mac’ has been an essential part of my staff for several years,” outgoing athletic director Barry Alvarez said in a statement Wednesday. “In particular, his leadership and intelligence were critical in helping our department navigate the various challenges of the past 15 months. Those same qualities will serve him well on into the future.”

McIntosh joined Alvarez’s athletic department in December 2014 as the Associate Athletic Director for Business Development before being named Deputy Athletic Director in July 2017. As Deputy Athletic Director, McIntosh oversaw the day-to-day operations of the department, recruiting, business development, human resources and strategic planning.
Alvarez served as UW’s Athletic Director for nearly 20 years, taking over as AD in addition to being head football coach in April 2004.
