Charges: Viroqua man passed out with child in car

A Viroqua man is charged with reckless endangerment after he was found passed out with a 1-year-old child in a car.

Police say Cody Onshus, 20, had been smoking the prescription painkiller oxycodone.

Another motorist told police the driver and a front-seat passenger were apparently asleep in the car at a stop sign in Onalaska Friday. The woman said she reached in to turn off the ignition and picked up the child.

The La Crosse Tribune reports Onshus wasn’t breathing and had turned blue. He and the passenger were taken to a hospital.

Prosecutors charged Onshus in La Crosse County with second-degree reckless endangerment and first-offense operating while intoxicated with a minor in the vehicle. He was released on a signature bond.

Police say the child was turned over to Child Protective Services.
