Carl E. Tanis

Carl E. Tanis, age 90, passed away on May 20, 2017, after a yearlong struggle with bladder cancer.
He was born on May 11, 1927, the son of Lyla (Favorite) and Arend Tanis. Carl married Jeanette Dalton, whom he met at Fenger High School in Chicago, prior to his enlistment in the Marine Corps in 1945. He was discharged in 1949 with the rank of Sergeant. Carl then became a car salesman in South Holland, Ill. for many years and became Manager of the dealership.
He became interested in antique clocks and taught himself to repair all makes and models. He quit the car business and opened his own clock shop, Carl Tanis’ Clock Emporium in Frankfort, Ill., in 1968. Carl had the shop open for about 20 years before moving it into the basement of their new home in Homewood. He was very well known for his ability to fix any clock, and continued to repair them until the last year of his life. Only cancer stopped him.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy (Sergio) Marrero.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; son, Michael; and his siblings, Russ, Mel, Bill, Pete, Lucille, and Chester.
Per Carl’s request, no formal service will be held.
A special thanks to Robert Radford at First Unitarian Universalist Society of Madison, and everyone at Agrace HospiceCare for their support during this time.
