Body of man who went missing on Mississippi River found Friday

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The body of a man who went missing on the Mississippi River along the Grant County border earlier this week has been recovered.

A University of Dubuque flight school student saw Alan Hartig’s body just after 12:45 p.m. Friday about two miles south of where Hartig had last been seen.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said Hartig, 51, of Dubuque, Iowa, was wading in shallow water with his pontoon beached on a sand bar near Finley’s Landing Wednesday evening when the boat dislodged. Hartig went after the boat in shallow water; the empty pontoon was found a short distance away later Wednesday.

Crews from Wisconsin and Iowa searched nearby waters for Hartig following his disappearance.
