Boaters on Lake Monona rescued when sailboat capsizes

Police: Occupants were wearing personal flotation devices, no injuries reported

MADISON, Wis. — Two boaters were rescued from Lake Monona Tuesday night after their sailboat capsized, according to a release.

Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Madison Fire Department crews responded to the eastern shore of Lake Monona around 6:15 p.m. for reports of a sailboat that had capsized, officials said.

High winds caused the smaller catamaran-style boat to capsize, and an observer on the shoreline called 911 when he saw the occupants struggling to get the boat upright, according to the release. Deputies pulled the two boaters from the water and transported them to shore while the MFD Lake Rescue Team towed the sailboat to shore.

Both occupants were wearing their personal flotation devices, officials said. There were no injuries reported, and the sailboat was not damaged.

“This lake rescue is another good example of how the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison Fire Department work collaboratively,” Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said in the release. “By sharing resources and equipment we are able to respond to incidents like this in the most effective way possible.”
