Black Hawk Middle School principal resigns

The principal of Black Hawk Middle School has resigned effective Friday, according to a letter sent to families Friday.

“I’m writing today to let you know that Ms. (Kenya) Walker has resigned her position as principal of Black Hawk effective today,” the letter said.

Acting principal Jamie Sims will continue in the role for the remainder of the year, according to the letter. Walker had been on leave since the end of January.

Officials said they plan to appoint an interim principal for next school year by the summer and then work with families to launch a full principal screening and selection process to “ensure we find the right leader for the long term.”

The letter also provides an update about the status of the review of Black Hawk’s financial protocols, which was part of a standard review of district-wide financial practices, officials said.

“We are now finalizing that review and expect to be able to share the results with you in the next week,” the letter said.

Officials said they are working with Sims to ensure students are not affected while the review has taken place.

Walker had been the principal at Black Hawk since 2015.
